When I set up my plane/glider/heli, do I have to go with the standard receiver plug configuration?

Absolutely not! This radio is so flexible that every port in the receiver is "open". Servo assignments can be set in the transmitter from any receiver port. You can then go back and program each servo individually thorough the transmitter to get them all matched up in throw, centering, rates, etc.
