Can you explain AFR to me?
One thing that confuses many people is the use of the term "AFR" in Futaba's advanced transmitters. "AFR" stands for "Adjustable Function Rate". It is as it's named: an adjustment for a function. In the AFR menu, you can adjust how the function operates when you move the control for that function. No matter how many channels are being used for the function, you adjust the entire function in the AFR menu.
When the term, "function" is discussed, it means what control surfaces are being used or what operation...so we're talking about the elevators as a function, or the ailerons, flaps, gear, and so forth. If you have four servos operating ailerons, with two servos per side, you only need to go into the AFR to adjust how the ailerons, as a function, behave. When you adjust the AFR, all of the servos involved are adjusted.
The AFR screen is fundamental to many options inside the transmitter. It defines how a control function works, it is used to define the relationship of a slave channel to a master channel in a mix, and it defines the overall way a mix works. Just look at the different mixes and functions inside the Model Menu, and you'll see an AFR-type screen. If you know how to set one, you know how to set them all.
In your AFR menu screen you will see that there are different "modes" available: EXP 1, EXP 2, and POINT.
EXP1: This is the normal Exponential curve you will use for your flight controls. You can use it to "soften" or "harden" the feel of the controls around their center. It is the default curve for every function that uses an AFR-type screen. If you don't enter a value, the response is a straight line.
EXP2: This curve is very useful because it can alter the way your engine's throttle responds to the stick. Many model engines do not have a linear response stick position. By adjusting the curve, you can make the engine's RPM have a very close relationship to the throttle stick position.
POINT: This allows you to set specific points on the AFR curve. This is very useful when you need to have specific relationships set up. You would want to set points in a heli's throttle curve, or points in a knife-edge mix, and so on. It depends upon how you want to set things up.
